BEAR PG Conference 2012

Research Computing developments

In February 2011 the University, in conjunction with IT Services, announced that it will be making recurrent funds available for Research Computing, including HPC, developments. The BEAR2 web pages give more information, including an overview of the new and enhanced services that will be introduced by IT Services.

MidPlus Regional HPC Centre

Following an EPSRC call in December 2011 a regional HPC Centre has been created, which enhances the HPC facilities that are available at Birmingham. The MidPlus section of this site gives more details.


The BEAR environment has been set up to enable researchers and academics to further their research.

The BEAR environment consists of the following services :

Blue BEAR  

The cluster consists of 1,500 processing cores and approximately 150 terabytes of user disk space with a sophisticated cluster filesystem more...

To keep abreast of the latest news, please subscribe to the BEAR mailing lists.

Any problems should be logged with the IT Service Desk, not sent to the mailing lists. This ensures that they are referred to the most appropriate person and tracked. This also allows any common problems to be identified and addressed as well as addressing the individual support requests.
